Amersham and Chesham in Buckinghamshire have been named the UK’s happiest places to retire, according to a new study by Legal & General[i]. The research ranked retirement hotspots across the country based on factors including health, social connections, environment, and financial security.

The findings highlight that a fulfilling retirement is about far more than just money. A strong community, accessible local amenities, and a safe, pleasant environment all contribute to wellbeing in later life.

The Southeast of England dominated the top 10, with locations in Surrey, Mid Sussex, and East Sussex also making the list, reinforcing their appeal for retirement living.

The results have been welcomed by My Future Living, the UK’s leading retirement rental brand. Joanne Couch, Director of Finance & Operations, said: “This research reflects what we see every day. Wellbeing in retirement is about feeling connected, safe, and supported. Renting in a retirement community offers maintenance-free living, social opportunities, and long-term security through assured tenancies, giving older adults true peace of mind.”

One retiree who is enjoying a happy retirement in East Sussex is Jean Wray. Four years ago, she sold her North London home and moved to a retirement development in Homeshore House in Seaford, East Sussex through My Future Living, seeking a quieter life by the sea.

A former legal secretary, Jean (pictured above) remains active, organising social events for fellow residents, from bingo evenings and garden centre trips to pub lunches and film afternoons. She also volunteers for two charities supporting people recovering from strokes and those with sight problems.

“I love being part of the community and helping others get out and about,” Jean says. “We even have a communal greenhouse where we grow and share produce. It’s a lovely way to keep busy and meet new people.”

Maintaining a house was becoming harder. Selling allowed us to help our son with a deposit for his own place, and now I have a worry-free life – if something needs fixing, it’s sorted quickly. I’d highly recommend renting in retirement. It’s a fantastic way of life without any worries.”

My Future Living features retirement developments is some of the happy retirement hotspots across the UK.  This includes a one bedroom apartment in Homeridings House in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire for £1,075 per calendar month. The apartment is a short bus ride into the centre of the city. With easy access to rail and road links to all parts of the country, Milton Keynes is an ideal place to enjoy retirement.

Or there is a one bedroom apartment in Homeworth House in Woking, Surrey for £1,095 per calendar month. The development is close to local shops, and Woking’s town centre is within easy walking distance. Social activities at the development include bingo and quiz nights.

Joanne adds, “Whether people want to be in the heart of a bustling town, enjoy the peace of the countryside, or live by the coast, we feature developments to suit every lifestyle. Renting in retirement offers the flexibility to choose the perfect location without the responsibilities of home ownership, so people can focus on enjoying life to the fullest.”

Most developments have communal lounges, gardens, a lift, guest suites and an onsite manager, plus there is a 24-hour careline in most apartments for out of hour’s emergencies. To find out more about available homes and retirement rental options, visit: www.myfutureliving.co.uk
