Berkshire Site Manager Named Best in the Country for Quality

A site manager at David Wilson Homes’ Donnington Heights development in Newbury has won a top national award for the quality of homes he is building.

Steve Watts (42) has won a Pride in the Job Quality Award from the National Housebuilding Council (NHBC), marking him down as among the very best in the country.

Across the country, site managers working for David Wilson Homes’ parent company, Barratt Developments, have won 96 Pride in the Job Quality Awards in total this year. This is the 19th year in a row that Barratt Developments site managers have won more of these awards than any other housebuilder.

Steve has been with David Wilson Homes since October 2015, having first joined as an Assistant Site Manager. He has now won two successive awards, having achieved his first in 2022, in his first year since becoming a site manager.

Steve said: “Being named among the Pride in the Job Award winners last year was my proudest career moment to date, but to retain the award for a second consecutive year is fantastic.

“My first award was four years in the making, and having been recognised once again gives me even more motivation to maintain the high standards set at Donnington Heights.

“We’ll celebrate the award as a team on site, as it’s a credit to everyone’s hard work as part of a wider collective effort.”

The awards rate site managers against key criteria such as technical expertise, health and safety, consistency, leadership and attention to detail. The awards celebrate the vital role site managers play in ensuring new homes are delivered on-time, on safe sites, and to the highest quality standards.

Every site manager who is registered with the NHBC is automatically entered into the awards, with just 450 winners being selected from over 11,000 entrants, showing how difficult they are to win.

These awards follow on from Barratt Developments site manager Kirk Raine being named as the Supreme winner of last year’s NHBC Pride in the Job Quality Awards. In January, Kirk was crowned as the winner in the Large Builder Category for his work managing The Grove at Doseley Park, near Telford. This is the sixth time that a Barratt Homes site manager has won the Supreme award in the past eight years.

Campbell Gregg, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Southern, said: “It’s great news for our customers and the business that Steve has won a prestigious Pride in the Job Quality Award.

“The awards showcase what it takes to be a top site manager and demonstrates our long-term commitment to looking after our customers and building high quality homes. We are very proud to have won more of these awards than any other housebuilder for 19 years in a row now.”

These awards closely follow Barratt Developments being awarded five stars by its customers for satisfaction in the annual Home Builders Federation (HBF) new homes survey. To be rated five star means that more than 90% of its customers would recommend one of its homes to a friend, with David Wilson Homes being the only major national housebuilder to be rated five star for 14 years in a row.
