First time buyers Rochander and Dave Hartley

STARTING with a blank canvas, first time buyers Rochander and Dave Hartley have been putting thousands of followers in the picture about their home style via Instagram.

The couple live in a four-bedroom detached Brookline style property from Prospect Homes in Warton they fell in love with from the very first viewing.

Rochander recalled: “We were both living with my mum and were in our 30s so thought it was time we moved out! We thought renting was dead money and while we were putting money aside each month we kept going on holiday so it took longer than expected to save a deposit.”

They reserved six days after first viewing the Prospect development.

“We kept coming back because everything about this house was much better than the ones we’d seen on other new build developments – bigger sized bedrooms, the garden’s nice and big and the drive way has space for two cars. Even the internal doors were more attractive,” she added.

“There were three Brooklines available and ready to move into but we chose this one as it had grey carpets and tiles in, which we would have chosen ourselves anyway. I love the trend for grey décor – our home is 50 shades of grey from light grey to charcoal, although we’re slowly changing some rooms to black and white now.”

In search of interior inspiration before they moved in, Rochander turned to Instagram and decided to start their own account the_brookline. It now has more than 4,000 followers.

“It’s really nice because people who are thinking of buying a Prospect home or have bought ask questions about the size of the house and the quality and others who just want to know about the décor,” Rochander explained.

Rochander, 33, is an activities coordinator and Dave, 34, works in car sales.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of Brits aged between 25-34 look to social media for home inspiration every day, according to research by the HBF.

Their survey found that 1 in 5 Brits (19%) have spent time cleaning just to create a background for ‘the perfect photo’ for social media.

“I’m no Hincher – I clean the house how my mum taught me,” Rochander laughed.

All of the homes on the Rivers Leigh development, where Dave and Rochander live, have now been sold. Prospect is building and selling new homes at The Ridings in nearby Longridge.

Dave said: “A new build home offers a fresh canvas you can do what you want to without spending money changing it, you can put your stamp on it straight away.”
